What is a Hunger Banquet anyway?
A Hunger Banquet is an interactive event where guests have the opportunity to learn more about and experience world food distribution and poverty. Essentially, at a Hunger Banquet a meal is provided, followed by incredible and dynamic speakers. But here’s the catch: your seat and the meal you are served is determined by the luck of the draw. When you arrive, you will choose a place seating at random that will determine the meal you will receive. Portion sizes are dispensed according to the way that food is distributed worldwide. You could be eating like people living in extreme poverty, people with low incomes, people with middle incomes, or like people who are wealthy. The cool thing is, just like we have no control over where we are born and whether we are born into poverty or prosperity, we have no control over our seating place for a few hours.
During and after the meal, speakers will elaborate on the issues of poverty and food distribution, God’s heart for the poor, and how we can help to make a difference. These speakers have experience with both local and international poverty and are passionate about the cause.
What is the point of a Hunger Banquet?
- It raises awareness and understanding about poverty and inequality in food distribution.
By experiencing a small demonstration of world distribution conditions, participants gain a better understanding of inequalities in our world. Then the awesome speakers help us learn even more.
- It raises money for missions.
No, this does not mean that you need to break the bank in order to attend. The entire banquet is only $10 (that’s basically the same price as a great meal in the cafe, or at Harvey’s). The money raised will support Tyndale’s Missions teams.
- It’s simply fun!
Do you need a break from studying or want to change up your typical evening routine? Well, coming to the Hunger Banquet with your friends (or alone, if that’s how you roll) is the perfect way to make that happen!
What should I expect at the Hunger Banquet?
First of all, you should expect to have fun! You can also expect to eat some pretty good food. Even if you are seated at a low income seating place, the food is still tasty. I will let you in on a little secret, the people who get the most food will probably share with you anyways. Finally, the speakers are always great. Not only do they offer lots of information, but they are also interesting to listen to.
When and where is the Hunger Banquet?
